A Visit to Brooklands
Yesterday afternoon Square Church held its annual garden party in the beautiful grounds of Brooklands, Holywell Green, which had been generously thrown open for the event by Mr. J. E. Shaw, J.P. The function was favoured with ideal weather, and the grounds and surrounding country were looking their best. A large company was present, and a happy time was spent. A treasure hunt was arranged, four prizes being hid in the grounds, and eventually all the prizes were discovered. The tennis courts and the bowling green were busily engaged both afternoon and evening, and various competitions were entered into with much zest.
The Square orchestral band rendered much appreciated selections of music under the conductorship of Mr. Hooson. Tea was served in the Holywell Green Congregational School, which had been very kindly lent for the occasion.
During the evening opportunity was taken to express the thanks of the visitors to Mr. Shaw for his great kindness in allowing them the use of the grounds. The Rev. Gwilym Rees said they wished to express to Mr. Shaw their very sincere gratitude for allowing them to come to Brooklands. He understood it was not the first time they had been there. Referring to the connection of the Shaw family with Square Church, Mr. Rees said that one of the most revered names in the history of the church was Mr. Shaw’s uncle, the late Mr. Thomas Shaw, M.P., and he was glad also to know that the family had done a great deal to uphold the traditions of Congregationalism, by their benefactions to the Holywell Green Church, which was a beautiful building.
They had had an afternoon of pure joy, and after the smoke and grime and rain which they had been experiencing in Halifax they would all feel better both in mind and body for the pleasure of that function. Brooklands was such a beautiful place, it reminded him of Wales, and it seemed to him as if it was really a part of Wales which by some chance had been transplanted to Yorkshire.
Mr. J. E. Holdsworth briefly seconded the vote of thanks, and in reply Mr. Shaw said it was always a pleasure to have anybody there who thoroughly enjoyed the place and the country around. He liked the name of "Square." It gave the idea of a church really strong and progressive, and that was his idea of the character of the church, as he hoped it was the character of the people of the church. One could get enjoyment by seeing other people enjoy themselves, and it had been a pleasure to him to have them there. The party broke up about 9 o'clock and the event was voted one of the best in the annals of the church.
