The park is located in the village of Holywell Green, which was recorded in the Domesday Book as a small hamlet within the township of Stainland. The village gets its name from St Helen's Well, which was known within the area during the Middle Ages. The original location of this well is uncertain.

Things to do

There is a playground in the park as well as a basketball hoop and a small football field.

There are many paths around the park for walking.

There is a Deer Park next to the park and sometimes the deer are brought down to the field next to the park. There are many walking trails from the park, why not go up the Cat’s Steps towards Jagger Green or walk along the border of the Deer Park and round to Stainland.

The park is open 24 hours to pedestrians, but the car park is only open from 7am to 7pm.

There are no toilets at the park but the local pub, the Holywell Inn at the top of Station Road, is happy to allow visitors to use their facilities.  It is only a 3 minute walk.

History of the Park

Shaw Park has a rich and fascinating history shaped by the Shaw family of Stainland, whose legacy can still be seen throughout the landscape today. The park is home to several Grade II listed buildings and structures. Together, they form an important part of our local heritage and a story we are proud to share.

The park was donated to Elland Urban District Council by Raymond Shaw.  The Shaw family were textile merchants that operated out of the Piece Hall in Halifax and in the late 18th century, John Shaw built a mill in Holywell Green. It was extended in the second half of the 19th century by Samuel Shaw, who also built a new family home near the mill in 1868, which he called Brooklands. The garden for the house had extensive landscaping that included a pond with a fountain.  The pond is still there but sadly the fountain is not.   The three towers linked by a wall, the gatehouse and the Aviary were built at the same time and are listed Grade II buildings. The garden is now forms Shaw Park.

Although, Elland Urban District Council accepted the gift on 21 October, 1953, it was not until 18 October 1955 that the paperwork was signed and on Saturday 20 May, 1961, that the chairman of Elland Council (Cllr W Ramsden) opened the park.

Friends of Shaw Park

Our aim is to improve the park environment to make it more welcoming to visitors, organise community events that will engage residents and visitors with the park environment, increase awareness of the park's unique architectural history and connections to local industrial heritage. We aim to develop and protect areas as habitats for wildlife to flourish, and to improve accessibility and create a safe and thriving environment.  With this in mind, the volunteers help maintain the park, undertaking tasks such as clearing the paths, weeding, planting and as well as other tasks.  We also run seasonal ‘clean up’ events in the park.
